ShoreBank Corporation is America's first and leading community development and environmental bank holding company with $2.2 billion in assets. It was founded in 1973 by community activists and bankers who set out to combat redlining. Since then, they have demonstrated how to successfully provide access to resources for individuals, nonprofits, faith-based organizations and small businesses in underserved urban neighborhoods and help create new economic opportunities that are a catalyst for positive social change.
ShoreBank is one of only a few triple bottom line companies in the country, let alone financial institutions that measure their financial performance equally with their impact upon the community and environment. Today, the ShoreBank family consists of two commercial banks-the original bank in Chicago, which now has branches in Detroit and Cleveland, and ShoreBank Pacific, which was the first bank in the U.S. to focus on environmentally sound and sustainable development in the Pacific Northwest.
There are five place-based nonprofit affiliates of ShoreBank Corporation that make higher risk loans and equity-like investments to provide training and technical assistance, plus two other non-profits--one international and one domestic-that work with other financial institutions to extend their reach. These are the Center for Financial Service Innovations, which researches sustainable strategies for serving the under-banked, and an international consulting company-ShoreBank International-which helps financial institutions, governments and communities around the world provide credit for micro-enterprise, small and medium size businesses and housing. This company grew out of an invitation in the 1980s to advise Muhammad Yunus, who won this year's Nobel Peace Prize. Over the years, ShoreBank consultants have worked with nearly 50 small banks in more than 40 countries to advance more then $300 million in small business loans.
ShoreBank and its founders have garnered international and local honors for demonstrating how to successfully lend to low and moderate income borrowers, while generating community benefits by both the public and private sectors. In 2007, ShoreBank cofounders Ron Grzywinski and Mary Houghton were named to U.S. News & World Report's list of America's Top Leaders. In 2005, Grzywinski received the John Gardner Award from the Independent Sector, and Mary Houghton was named Community Development Banker of the Year by American Banker.
ShoreBank gives its employees the chance to work on the leading-edge of community development and environmental banking, with a team of dynamic industry leaders without equal. By working with the innovators of the triple-bottom-line, employees are able to make a direct, meaningful and lasting impact in the communities where they work.
ShoreBank offers its employees the opportunity to work for a global organization in both rural and urban areas, with tremendous opportunities for advancement and promotion. All but one of its presidents has been promoted from within the bank itself. ShoreBank's workplace also reflects the diversity of its customers and the communities it serves; 65% of bank officers and 40% of top-salaried employees are minorities and 54% of bank officers are women.
